British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
